## Keynote Indications
The effects of bites by the common viper and related species have been collected and have 
furnished the data for homeopathic prescribing. The venom of common German Vipera torva affects the blood 
and blood vessels, leading to hemorrhage and inflammation of the vessels. 
Allen related the case of a gold beater who found the veins of his right arm become exceedingly swollen and 
painful, so that he could no longer work or let his hand hang down. Vip. cured immediately. 
A case quoted from M ed. Adv. of varicose veins of the popliteal space with the sensation as though the leg 
would burst and a nervous, fidgety condition of the feet which kept them in constant motion, was cured with 
Vip. 30c. The bursting feeling appears to be at the root of this characteristic. 
A keynote for Vip. in cases of phlebitis and varicose veins is “Worse on letting the limb affected hang down,” 
as if it would burst with fullness. The region of the vessel affected is inflamed and sensitive.  
Swan said Vip. was a remedy for all forms of nosebleed. 
Vip. affects veins, causing inflammation and ahemorrhagic tendency.  Inflammation of veins with great 
swelling. Cardiac dropsy. Bursting sensation, enlargement of liver. Special action on kidneys and induces 
hematuria. Edema of glottis. Goiter. Ailments of menopause. 
Paralysis, ascending, paraplegia of foot. Multiple neuritis. Poliomyelitis. Temporary  
increase in reflexes, paresis supervenes, a paraplegia of the lower limbs extending upwards. Resembles acute 
ascending paralysis of Landry. Vip. has a chronic and periodic action, the symptoms return annually for years.

## Modalities (Aggravations / Ameliorations)
Worse from letting limbs hang down. Worse by pressure. Worse change of weather, from cold 
touch. Worse yearly.

## Symptoms by System

### Eyes
- Eyes are dark yellow, red, inflamed and watery,  staring, sunken.
- Pupils are dilated or left dilated, right 
contracted.
- Paralysis of lids, dropped over eyes.
- Vision is dim, dim in left eye, lost in right.

### Face
- Excessively swollen.
- Lips and the tongue swollen, livid, protruding.
- Tongue dry, brown, blac k.
- Speech 
difficult.

### Mouth
- Scorbutic line on gums.
- Tongue swollen, brownish -black, protruding.
- Lips, blue, swollen.
- Speech 
difficult.
- Nose - Nosebleed with vertigo, while nursing the child.

### Throat
- Swelling like goiter.
- Edema of glottis.
- Closure of throat so that she could swallow only water and milk.
- COMMENTS - Vip.
- patients resist the cold badly.
- The parts may be paralyzed and ulcers and gangrene follow.
- Worse from letting limb o r part hang down.
- Sensation as if something ran up the thigh occurred in the bitten 
limb in one case.
- In one case there was sweat over the whole body except the bitten limb.
- Leonard gave Vip.
- to a woman suffering from menopausal hemorrhage, flow red with d ark clots, excessive to 
prostration and faintness.
- She had a small uterine fibroid.
- A few doses relieved and the excessive hemorrhage 
did not return.
- He also noted the case of a woman nursing a child a year old who was much prostrated by hemorrhage lasting 
several weeks, not profuse, but continuous: Nosebleed nearly every day, weaning brought no relief.

### Chest
- Oppression with anxiety with violent efforts to breathe and swallow.
- Veins of chest and abdomen thick 
and hard.
- Swelling of chest as far as umbilicus after bite on face.

### Stomach & Abdomen
- Digestion slow.
- Pain in epigas trium, wor se pressure.
- Nausea with shud dering with attack of 
faintness.
- Retching with suffocative sensation.
- Vomiting after milk of all food and drink.
- Excruciating pain in the epi gastrium, worse pressure.
- Violent pain in enlarged liver extends to 
shoulder and hip, jaundice with fever.
- Appetite lost.
- Thirst with moist tongue, for cold drinks.

### Urinary & Genital
- Menopausal hemorrhage, flow red with dark clots, not profuse but continu ous with prostration and 
faintness from nursing the child.
- Kidneys - Strangury.
- Involuntary urina tion.
- Urine is increased, suppressed, dark yellow, as in jaundice.
- Hematuria.
- Ineffectual desire.

### Extremities
- Patient is obliged to keep the limbs elevated.
- When limbs are allowed to hang down, it seems as 
if they would burst and the pain is unbearable.
- Shuffling gait caused by paralysis of foot.
- Varicose veins 
and acute phlebitis.
- Veins swollen, sensitive, bursting pain.
- Blue lower limbs.
- Severe cramps in lower limbs.
- Liver - Violent pain in enlarged liver with jaundice and fever, extends to shoulder and hip.

### Neck & Back
- Sticking in kidneys.
- Pain in loins.

### Skin
- Livid.
- Boils, carbuncles with bursting sensation, relieved by elevating parts.
- Ulcers.
- Gangrene.
- Skin 
peels in large plates.
- Lymphangioma.

### Sleep
- Disposed to yawn.
- Sleepiness and heaviness with inability to sleep and also almost constant necessity 
to change the position.
- Sleeplessness from pain.
- Restless at night.
- Temperature - Temperature is diminished, resists cold badly.
- Chilliness with cold sweat, with rigidity and 
clammy sweat, then fever.
- Fever of irregular type intermittent fever.
- Sweat after vomiting.
