# Sanguinarinum Nitricum

## Keynote Indications
Sanguin-n. is a very fine brownish -red powder, pungent, acid, bitter and inodorous. It is 
soluble in alcohol, ether, water and oils, but not in the same proportion in all. Pure sanguinarine is a pearly -
white substance, but when combined with any of the acids the result is a salt of some shade of red, crimson 
or scarlet. The color of the blood-root may be due to the presence of some native salt of Sanguinarine. 
Sang-n. was proved in 3x trituration by Professor Owens of Pulte Medical College. Nasal polyps. Acute and 
chronic catarrh. Acute pharyngitis (Wye.). Smarting and burning in throat and chest especially under sternum. 
Influenza. Chronic follicular phar yngitis. Lachr ymation, pains in eyes and head, sore scalp, sense of 
obstruction.

## Modalities (Aggravations / Ameliorations)
Worse touch, at night. Pressure aggravates soreness of eyes. Bathing with warm water 
ameliorates heat in forehead. Headache is ameliorates by discharge of much mucus from nose.

## Symptoms by System

### Head
- Pain in supra-orbital region.
- Burning pain in forehead and root of nose.
- Sensation of obstruction and 
fullness in head, ameliorated by discharge of a large quantity of thick, yellow, sweet -tasting mucus.
- Kidneys - Passed urine every hour during the night.
- Urine had bright yellow or white sediment.
- Pain in supra-orbital region.
- Burning pain in forehead and root of nose.
- Sensation of obstruction and 
fullness in head, ameliorated by discharge of a large quantity of thick, yellow, sweet -tasting mucus.

### Eyes
- Sore, aching pain in eyeballs.
- Burning, pressing aching, and sore pains in eyes.
- Profuse lachrymation, 
tears gush out.
- Redness and soreness of inner canthi.
- Redness of lids and conjunctiva.
- Sight dim, as if looking 
through gauze.

### Ears
- Obstruction of Eustachian tube.
- Roaring in right ear.
- Difficulty in distinguishing sounds.

### Mouth
- Acrid, burning sensation on tongue.
- Ulceration on the side of the tongue.
- Roughness and dryness 
in mouth and throat.
- Heat in mouth as if pepper had been taken.
- Increased flow of mucus and saliva with 
sneezing and burning in forehead.
- Bitter taste extending back to root of tongue.
- Nose' - Dry and burning nostrils.
- Feels obstructed.
- Enlarged turbinates at beginning of hypertrophic process.
- Profuse, watery mucus with burning pain,  with pressure over root of nose.
- Sneezing.
- Secretion scant, 
tendency to dryness.
- Nostrils plugged with thick, yellow, bloody mucus.
- Small crusts which bleed when 
removed.
- Post-nasal secretions stuck to naso -phar- ynx, dislodged with difficulty.
- Rawness and soreness in 
posterior sinuses.

### Throat
- Voice altered, deep, hoarse.
- Rough, dry, constricted, burning.
- Right tonsil sore, swallowing difficult.
- COMMENTS - The catarrhal symptoms of Sanguin -n.
- appear in great intensity, the nose, eyes, throat and 
bronchi being affected.
- Sensation of obstruction and fullness in the head, accumulation of mucus ob structing 
nose, awakes frequently with dry mouth, the nose being obstructed.
- Accumulation of mucus behind center of sternum, sense of suffocation, feeling as if air -passages lined with 
thick, stiff mucus or pus.
- Heat and tension behind sternum is characteristic and so is expectoration of quantities 
of sweet-tasting mucus.
- Expectoration 
of thin, frothy, very tenacious mucus.
- Lachrymation, pains in eyes and head, sore scalp, obstructed nose and burning pains throughout all regions 
were experienced.
- Symptoms of influenza, even to the loss or perversion of taste.
- “Sensation arising to nostrils 
as if he had eaten strong horseradish.” 
Hale reported the case of Mr.
- B., 40, dark, had for eight years in spite of continuous old -school treatment, 
chronic post-nasal catarrh, bronchitis and laryngitis.
- Voice altered, deep, hoarse, speech with effort, as if from 
chest.
- Severe pressure from behind sternum.
- Mucus membrane dry, raised only a few balls of gray mucus.
- He spent two winters on St.
- John’s River, Florida, and wa s better there, but worse again on his return north.

- 6c trituration, was given every two hours.
- In one week he was better, there was more moisture in 
 
 
his throat than three had been for two years.
- Voice markedly better.

- In ten weeks he regained six pounds of his lost weight and strength in 
proportion.

and in sixteen weeks he was perfectly well.

- S., city missionary, 49, had constant hacking cough, raw, sore feeling in throat, sore aching and pressing 
behind sternum.
- She was much exposed to cold winds of winter, which set up coryza and irritation.

- every two hours, enabled her to follow her occupati on without suffer ing and in ten weeks she was 
completely cured.

- W., 55, subject to frequent attacks of cold in head, throat and chest.
- After a long drive in open trap contracted 
a severe cold in head, throat, lungs.
- Sore and lame all over, frequent sneezing, lachrymation.
- Next day sore throat very marked, constant tickling in throat -pit, exciting cough, at first short and hacking, but 
in two days it became violent and convulsive.

relaxation of constriction across chest.
- The discharge was yellow and sweetish-tasting, continued all day.

- Wesselhoeft regarded Sanguin -n.
- as the simillimum for “New England colds.” Adenoids and polyps have 
been cured with it.

### Chest
- Pressure behind center of sternum.
- Tightness in the chest.
- Tension in chest, burning and accumulation of mucus behind center of sternum.
- Short, 
hacking cough arising from sensation of tightness in chest.
- Strong desire for fresh air.
- Sense of suffocation.
- Dryness and burning in throat and bronchials.
- Feeling as if air passages lined with thick, stiff mucus or pus.
- Chronic nasal, laryngeal and bron  
chial catarrh.
- Raises thin, frothy mucus, which is very tenacious.
- Tickling cough.
- Short, hacking cough with 
expectoration of thick, yellow, sweetish mucus.
- Cough is deep and rattling.

### Stomach & Abdomen
- Sensation of burning in stomach and esophagus.
- Belching up of putrid smelling gas though she 
had eaten nothing since morning.
- Borborygmus and pains in abdomen, as if diarrhea would set in, with sharp, cutting pains.
- Little appetite.
- Everything tastes dry like chips.
- Coffee did not taste natural, wanted something 
succulent, not pungent, but soothing to mouth and throat.

### Extremities
- Stiffness in muscles of left shoulder and neck.

### Neck & Back
- Stiffness in muscles of left neck and shoulder.
- Causations - Driving in cold wind, winter weather, exposure.

### Sleep
- Sleep poor, restless from feverish and irritable condition.
