Dale. A. M. Cushing and Demeures both proved Phaseolus nanus, but Cushing only published the symptoms observed on the heart. Demeures, in his proving, experience severe headache from fullness in the brain. Breathing slow, pulse slow or extinct. “Irregular, weak pulse and heart failure.” Soreness to touch in eyeballs, right rib, epigastrium, and right humerus. Diabetes. Cooper noted that the inside of the pod rubbed on warts is sa id to cure them. A decoction of the shells has been used as a drink for diabetes, but can cause severe headaches. Ramm noted it for dropsical effusion into pleural cavity, pericardium and peritoneum. Chronic disorders of the urinary tract from kidneys to urethra, pyelitis, bladder catarrh, gravel, stones, uric acid. Ramm considered Phase, an important remedy in gout and diabetes. He used a decoction of the whole dried ripe pod “of the taller variety,” Phaseolus vulgaris. ## Modalities (Aggravations / Ameliorations) Headache was worse by move ment of the head or any mental exertion, reading or writing. Pressure aggravates. ## Symptoms by System ### Mind - Could only be roused by speaking loudly. - Frightened by irregular action of heart. - Feeling that she would die with palpitations. - Abdomen - Pressure on abdomen gave pain, child shrank from it and drew up legs. - Dropsy. - Pain like hernia in right inguinal ring, lasting all day. - Could only be roused by speaking loudly. - Frightened by irregular action of heart. - Feeling that she would die with palpitations. - Abdomen - Pressure on abdomen gave pain, child shrank from it and drew up legs. - Dropsy. - Pain like hernia in right inguinal ring, lasting all day. ### Head - Aches chiefly in forehead or orbits from fullness of brain, worse any move ment or mental exertion. - Aches chiefly in forehead or orbits from fullness of brain, worse any move ment or mental exertion. ### Eyes - Pupils dilated, insensible to light. - Eyeballs (especially right) painful to touch as from a blow. - Scalding pain in right orbit. - Very smart itching in inner canthi. - Pain over right orbit worse from mental exertion. ### Face - Features expressed suffering. ### Chest - Breathing slow and sighing. - Sick feeling about heart with weak pulse. - Pulse rapid. - Palpitations. - Right ribs sore. - Dropsical effusion into pleura or pericardium. - Fearful palpitations and feeling that death is approaching. - Kidneys - Diabetic urine. - Bloody urine. - Uric acid gravel. - Breathing slow and sighing. ### Stomach & Abdomen - Pain in epigastrium when touched, especially in region of pylorus. - Severe, dull pain in epigastrium, vomiting. - Temperature - Cold perspiration. - COMMENTS - Cushing's proving recorded disturbance of the nervous system, genital organs, impotence, stomach, bowels and kidneys and this symptom, which brought the proving to an abrupt close: “I suddenly felt a curious sensation in the region of the heart. - It was so sudden and strange I immediately felt my pulse and found it very irregular and feeble, so much so I think I was frightened, at least, I did not take any more of the medicine.” Cushing used th is in his case of a female doctor, 30, married, no children, never ill except with children's diseases, had much mental trouble two years before and had done much cycling. - Since then her heart had given trouble. - About five times in a minute the heart would give one hard, unpleasant throb, then omit one beat. - During the night it was much worse and prevented sleep. - Phase. - 10c was given. - Thirty-six hours later the heart would beat a hundred beats without varying and improvement continued, but the patient had to give up the remedy on account of the headache it caused, “as if something were pressing hard against each temple”, much worse after each dose of the medicine. - The patient was never subject to headaches. - He had another case, in which a man, 45, had dropsy , heart and other complications. - Bean pod decoction enabled him to lie down on a couch and markedly diminished the dropsy. - A clergyman, 69, many years invalid on account of heart disease after unusual exertion was greatly exhausted and became entirely pulseless and so remained four days in spite of treatment until Phase. - 9x was given. - In a few hours pulse returned. - In thirty -six hours it was regular and strong and so remained until his death, which oc- curred two weeks later. - In another case, Cushing observ ed a woman, 50, weak, tired, badly acting heart for some years. - Phase. - 9x was given and in forty-eight hours “her heart wheeled into line all right and remains so.” Another woman, 87, heart acted badly, every third beat omitted. - After taking Phase, two days pulse quite right. - A nurse, 50, “had fearful time with her heart palpitating and feeling as if she should die,” Phase. - 15x cured. - The patient “never took anything in her life that did her so much good.” In a confinement case, with primipara, urine loaded with albumen, frightful convulsions, forceps delivery. - Two hours later the heart failed and no stimulants would start it. - Phase. - 9x was given and in ten minutes the heart was all right. - Twice in the night the dose had to be repeated, but that was all. - The albumen rapidly disappeared and a quick recovery was made. - S. - R. - Stone reported the case of Mr. - T., 69, whom he found semi -conscious, yet suffering severely, having been seized with distress in heart region, respiration labored, pulse 51. - He had attacks previously, but lighter and the pulse in them had always been slow. - Phase. - 6x was given, at first every half hour, then every hour. - The next day the patient was nearly well and said he “could feel every dose working.” ### Urinary & Genital - Complete impotence. - Prostate enlargement. ### Extremities - Pain to touch in extremity of head, of right humerus.
