COMMENTS - A case reported in Allen's Appendix recorded the history of apale girl, 14, having been advised to use mezereum leaves to make her f at and rosy, went into the woods and used them freely on her cheeks and surrounding parts. - Burning soon set in, the whole face swelled enormously, especially the nose, eyelids and hairy scalp. - Severe and painful sneezing, delirium, dull, unbearable, pressing pains in forehead, a nauseous dryness in throat and constant irritation to dry cough. - The face soon showed the appearance of erysipelas bullosum, nostrils closed, she could only breathe through her mouth, febrile pulse, burning urine. - Oil and compresses were applied, and after the second day desquamation occurred in large areas. - Health did not return. - Debility followed, with loss of vitality, mental de pression bordering on idiocy. - Then typhoid fever, lasting fully for three months to which she finally succumbed. - Poisoning has also been observed from the effects of the berries, causing dryness and burning of throat and stomach, intense thirst, a narcotic state, coma, and convulsions of eyes and upper limbs. - In a child of four, poisoned with the berries, t he lips swelled, the tongue was furred and swollen, protruding, with difficult swallowing. - The tongue remained quite raw when other symptoms had passed away. - Mez. - is one of Hahnemann's anti-psoric remedies. - Ulcers, with thick, yellowish, white scabs. - Vesicles, itch and burn. - Lint dressings stick to them and when they are torn away, bleeding occurs. - Burning vesicles on the sides of the fingers and ulcers on finger joints. - Canker sores with a scab, pus (Rhus-t., Nat-m.). - Herpes zoster, shingles itch and burn and form scabs. - Herpes zoster, during the eruption and for the neuralgia remaining after, especially if the pains are burning. - Vaccination eczemas. - Psoriasis and eczema, itching, worse in bed and from touch. - Intolerable itching, migratory itching. - Skin is scabby looking, with an itch underneath the scab that aggravates. - Pimples on ankles and backs of feet, horrid taste and clamminess of mouth in morning. - Pimples better by hard scratching. - Dry crust on the scalp and falling out of hair, accompanied with short sight. - Bone pains, particularly of the long bones. - The least touch is intolerable. - Affinity for the facial bones and teeth (Merc.). - Decay attacks the roots or sides of the teeth, rather than the crowns (Merc.). - Toothache is worse at night, from touch, even with the tongue. - Better by holding the mouth open and drawing in air. - Neuralgia about the eyes, the pains radiate and shoot downward. - Sensation in the eye as if a cold wind were blowing in it. - Hypersensitiveness of the ear to air. - Feeling as if air went through the ear to the throat. - Stitching, burning and itching in the rectum and anus. - During stool, the rectum prolapsed and the sphincter closes upon the protruded part. - Sluggish bowels. - Constipation after confinement. - Constricting tendency in the t hroat, stomach and tendons. - Enlarged testicles (Clem.). - The leg is shortened with pain in the hip. - Tension in muscles of the chest. - Pain and stiffness in muscles of neck. - Cramp -like contraction over chest and back and across front of chest. - Cooper noted that green discharges were particularly characteristic. - Carroll Dunham recorded a notable case of deafness, due to suppressed psora. - A youth, age 17, deaf since four and incapacitated thereby, secluded himself and brooded over his trouble. - Membranes thickened. - At the age of three, he had an eruption of thick, whitish scabs, hard, almost horny, covering the whole scalp. - There were fissures through which exuded on pressure a thick, yellowish pus, often very offensive. - There was much itching and disposition to tear off the scabs with the fingernails, worse at night. - The allopathic treatment was vigorous, a tar cap was placed on the head and when firmly adherent to the scabs was violently torn off, scabs and all, leaving the whole scalp raw. - This was painted wit h a saturated solution of Arg-n. - The eruption did not reap pear, but from that time the child was deaf. - The eruption was the very counterpart of an eruption observed in a proving by Wehle. - Mez. - 30c, three globules in a powder of sugar of milk, was given on February 3, March 1, and September 28, 1857 and January 26, 1858. - Improvement set in slowly after the first dose, which was only repeated when the effect of each preced ing dose seemed to be exhausted. - Finally, the hearing was for all practical purposes completely restored. - The action of Mez. - in catarrhal cases is illustrated in the case of Miss M. - R., 39, a brunette, who had chronic catarrh. - The left ear had long been deaf and the right had begun to fail. - There were noises in the ears. - Drum membranes retracted and scarred. - The naso-pharynx mucus membrane was granular and irritable. - There was excessive sensitiveness to the air, even of a fan and oc casionally a sensation as if air went through to the throat. - A dose of Mez. - given before each meal entirely relieved the symptoms. - T. - S. - Hoyne collected many cases illustrating the action of the remedy including a case of a woman treated by W. - E. - Payne. - She had no rest when alone, wanted company. - Ideas vanished while talking, could not repeat what had been learne d by heart. - Looked through the window for hours without being conscious of objects around. - Did not know what she was doing, forgot what she was about to utter, looked ill-humored pale, wretched, fallen away. - Apprehensiveness at pit of stomach, as when exp ecting some very unpleasant intelligence. - All symptoms relieved in a single night by Mez. - 20c. - S. - R. - Geiser noted the case of a man, 28, who had a violent neuralgia, boring pain in left lower jaw bone, extending to temple and ear. - Pain was worse at night, better from pressure. - Mez. - 3c relieved in two hours. - J. - W. - Vance recorded the history of H. - G., stout, healthy -looking, left supra-orbital neuralgia recurring daily at 9 a.m. - increasing until noon, declining until 4 p.m., when it entirely departed leaving no soreness behind. - Pain caused flow of tears. - Mez. - 1c cured permanently after other remedies had failed. - Hempel noted the case of a toothache in the incisor of a woman. - Tooth felt elongated, loose, excessively sensitive with sensation as if being raised out of its socket. - Upper part of tooth was excessively painful. - Mez. - 200c cured in a few hours. - Oehme noted the case of Mrs. - X., who had pain in her right eye tooth, daily increasing. - Felt too long. - Pains much worse by pressure on crown and outside root. - Mez. - 2c cured. - Oehme also recorded a case in which the fastenings of a hammock broke and a woman on it fell, striking her sacrum and coccyx on the stump of a tree. - She suffered excru ciating pain. - Arn. - was applied locally. - In a few weeks she came home and t he coccyx was still so tender she could not sit, only lie or stand. - Arn. - internally and externally for two weeks had no influence. - Mez. - 2c cured in five days. - Cooper noted the case of a woman, 48, who had rheumatism which came on ten years before in her ha nds from wearing wet gloves and extended later to arms and knees. - She had stiffness on walking with loss of muscular power, worse in hot weather, “pins and needles” in fingers on elevating arms. - Could not grasp things, sometimes one hand burned when the other was cold, menopausal flushings. - Great relief from Mez. - tincture. - Cooper also noted that Daphne laureola, the British representative of the genus, cured scald-head when Mez. - failed to work. - The symptoms in this case were worse by day, whereas Mez. - has w orse at night. - The pains of D. - laureola come on in the morn ing and affect the entire head or whole left side. - Guai. - pains are also worse by day and better by warmth. - H. - B. - Esmond cured with Mez. - 3x a youth, 17, who had been afflicted with “salt rheum” as long as he could remember. - It was absent in summer, but every autumn, as soon as cold weather came, his face, neck, hands and forearms would break out and continue sore until warm weather returned. - Mez. - cured a girl, 18, getting thin with headache across forehead, temples and eyes, a throbbing with sickness of stomach and water brash, always worse by movement, bowels very confined, menses never appeared. - H. - Noah Martin noted a patient that said “my stools are as hard as stone and as large a my arm. - I feel as if they would split me open. - They come in sections like mouthfuls and I becomes much exhausted and tremble with weakness. - Every stool is immediately preceded by chills and followed by long stitches up rectum.” Mez. - 12c produced a natural stool in twelve hours. ### Head - Violent headache on slighte st touch, after vexation. - Headache, worse from talking. - Stupefying headache in right side. - Numbness of one side of scalp or top of head. - Pressing pains as if skull would split. - Pains on slightest touch in temples and sides. - Cranial bones painful. - Boring pains in bones of occiput. - Violent congestion to head during menopause. - Affections of external head, scaly eruption, white scabs. - Burning pain of scalp. - Intolerable itching. - Obstinate twitching of muscles of left upper lid. - Eczema of lids. ### Ears - Thickening of tympanum. - Ears feel too open, as if tympanum was exposed to the cold air and it blew into the ear. - Chronic diffuse otitis. - Oozing eruption behind ear. - Itching behind ears, scratching causes small elevations, when scratched off the spots feel sore. - Desire to bore fin gers into ears. - Deafness after suppression of head eruptions. ### Face - Red. - Facial muscles drawn tight. - Face swollen, burning pains, confluent vesicles. - Boils on face. - Impetigo. - Eruptions around the mouth with coryza. - Cracks in corners of mouth. - Scabs about mouth. - Ulcers on upper lip. - Lips swollen, dry, scaly exter nally, painful, sore and burning. - Chin cov ered with elevated, white scabs. - Violent neuralgia about face and teeth, running towards ear, at night, worse eating, better near hot stove. - Neuralgic pains come and go quickly and leave part numb. - Sudden pains, wakes from sleep. - Left-sided prosopalgia. - Twitching of muscles, right sided. - Boring pains in bones of upper jaw. - Vio lent itching of face and scalp. ### Mouth - Salivation. - Mouth waters. - Taste bitter, sour, beer tastes bitter, which is vomited. - Br eath smells like rotten cheese. - Burning in mouth and throat, sometimes better eating. - Ranula, worse talking and chewing, ejects a watery fluid. - Dry, dark red mouth. - Flat, whitish ulcers on inner side of lips and corners of mouth. - Nose - Sneezing, coryza. - Frequent sneezing with pain of excoriation in chest. - Visible twitching at the root of nose. - Interior of nose excoriated. - Post nasal adenoids. - Perspiration - During sleep, following chill. - Skin drips with cold sweat. ### Throat - Dark, red, burning, sore, worse winter. - Burning in mouth and throat, sometimes better eating. - Burning in pharynx and esophagus. - Throat as if dry. - Sensation as if posterior part of throat were full of mucus. - Swallowing even of fluids difficult and painful, from severe burning and raw pain. - Constriction of pharynx. - Sensation of narrowing in throat. - Nausea felt in throat, better eating. - Teeth - Teeth feel dull and elongated. - Teeth feel cold. - Teeth pain ful on biting on them and from cold air. - Roughness from tartar on teeth. - Roots of teeth decay. - Rapid decay of hollow teeth. - Toothache into temples, better with mouth open and from drawing in air. - Toothache in gums from cold air. - Toothache from congestion to head. - Sensation as if tooth was being lifted out of socket. - Tongue - Burning in tongue with salivation. - Tongue coated along one side only. - Middle of the tongue fissured. - Thick, white coating on tongue with large, red, elevated papillae. ### Chest - Stitches in chest. - Sore pain in right axilla. - Soreness and burning in bones of thorax. - Constriction across chest. - Con traction of diaphragm. - Painful tension in intercostal muscles. - Chest feels too tight on stooping. - Sensation as if ants were running over chest. - Intercostal neuralgia following herpes zoster, worse at night and in warmth of bed. - Red spots like fleabites on chest. - Constitutions - Suited to light -haired per sons, phlegmatic temperament, irresolute. - Gouty, rheumatic, syphilitic miasm. - Cough - Irritation in throat causes hacking cough . - Dry tickling cough, into vomiting. - Cough, worse eating, on taking a warm drink. - Cough from beer. - Must cough till food is vomited. - Pulse full, hard, accelerated eve nings. - Pulse at times intermittent. - Pulse frequent mornings, slow evenings. - Kidneys - Red flakes float on to p of urine. - Hematuria, hot, preceded by cramps in bladder. - After urinating, a few drops of blood are passed. - Biting, burning in forepart of urethra at the close of urination. - Dyspnea, as if from adhesions or contraction of lungs. - Desire to take a long breath. - Snoring in children. - Yellow, viscid, salty expectoration. - Expectoration during day or tasting like an old catarrh. ### Stomach & Abdomen - Chronic gastritis, burning, corroding pain. - Constant, severe pain and pressure in stomach even after light foods. - Induration of stomach. - Stomach ulcer with much burning. - Burning and corroding pain in stomach, better milk and eating. - Constricting, pinching pain in stomach. - Sensation of apprehension, fear, faintness and goneness at stomach as if something was going to happen. - Eruptions, ooze, acrid, gluey moisture, form thick crusts, scabs with pus beneath or chalky white. - Intolerable, itching, worse by warm bath, worse in bed. - As if millions of insects were crawling on him. -
