The disease is called \n\u201cGlanders\u201d when the catarrhal symptoms are pronounced, \u201cFarcy,\u201d when these are not noticeable, the skin \nbeing chiefly affected with deposits in the lungs. Homeopathic preparations of both have been made. \nIn horses, glanders affects the lungs and the upper respiratory tract, causing coughs and disseminated \nulcerations and deposits throughout the lungs. Mallein, a toxin prepared from glanders, was used in veterinary \npractice as a test injection for deciding whether a horse suspected of glanders actually has the disease or not. \nHippozaeninum \nIf the horse reacts it is concluded there is glanders. \nIn a number of cases in which animals reacted to the first injections, repetitio n of the test has failed to elicit \nreaction, thus suggesting that Mallein is curative as well as diagnostic. \nThe nosode has been used by homeopaths, at the suggestion of Wilkinson, on the phenomena of the disease \nas guides. It has been used in a large num ber of cases involving low forms of suppuration and catarrh.
