# Fagopyrum Esculentum ## Remedy Classification - **Type:** Homeopathic Remedy - **Miasm:** Sycotic Miasm - **Temperament:** Chilly - **Aggravation Time:** Afternoon ## Keynote Indications Fagopyrum, commonly known as buckwheat, acts upon the skin and the digestive organs. It has had an extensive proving. Though there is little clinical experience with this herbal remedy on record, some features are sufficiently well marked to justify their being classed as characteristics. Itching, felt in different parts of the body, eyes, posterior sinuses, anus, deep in hands, legs etc. Intense an itching of the arms and legs, becoming worse toward evening. Senile itching,pruritus. Itching erythema. Blotches like fleabites, sometimes all over the body, sore to the touch and are multiplied by scratching. Persistent eruptions. Large blind boils. The itching of the face is especially marked about the roots of the whiskers. Persistent itching of the hands which is “deep in,” being supposed to be the result of irritation of the coats of the arteries. Offensive excretions. Fluent coryza. Post nasal catarrh, dry crusts, granular appearance of posterior sinuses with itching. Pain in streaks. Worse after retiring. ## Symptoms by System ### Mind - Depressed and irritable. - Irritable, cross. - Exceedingly happy. - Inability to fix attention, study or to remember what has been read. - Aversion to being spoken to. - Eyes swollen, red, hot, itching, as if sand in eyes. - Itching and smarting, swelling, heat and sorenéss. - Itching in the margins. - Aching deep in eyeballs. - As if eyeballs were pushed out. - Lachrymation, worse by reading. - Pain along lachrymal duct. - Meibomian glands of left lower lid inflamed. ### Ears - Itching in and around ears. - Heat, itching and neuralgic pains in external ears. - Itching along Eustachian tubes. ### Face - Face flushed. - Soreness of left malar bone, also of temporal region. - Lips dry and cracked, vertical crack on upper lip. ### Mouth - Soreness of teeth on closing them, worse by cold water. - Gums sore and bleed easily. - Swelling in roof of mouth. - Bad taste in mouth in morning. - Taste of ingesta after dinner, with belchings. - Neck - Parotid and submaxillary glands swollen, sore and painful. - Stiffness of neck and soreness of all neck muscles. - Neck tired, as if unable to support head. - Dull pain in back of neck, at base of occiput,’ better bending head backwards. - Nose - Itching in posterior sinuses. - Post nasal catarrh. - Fluent coryza with sneezing, followed by dryness and crust formation. - Nose red and sore externally. - Septum deeply cracked. ### Throat - Soreness and a feeling of excoria tion deep down pharynx. - Uvula elongated, tonsils swollen. - Thick mucus collects in throat on rising. - Badly-smelling cheesy mass coughed up. - Feeling as if a lump in esophagus, painful on swallowing. - Throbbing of carotids. - COMMENTS - Berridge recorded two cases in which Fago, was of service. - The first case concerned a dull, bruised pain in top of left shoulder, rather posteriorly, extending up neck, worse on moving the part, appearing on waking, going off after breakfast and returning later in the day. - Constipation. - Nausea a little before 11 a.m., afterwards dull pain in left temple and a feeling of heat all over. - After aggravating the pain in the shoulder, Fago, removed the symptoms. - In the second case. - Fago, permanently removed, after a week's aggravation, sink ing in the stomach about 6 p.m. - or 7 p.m., and temporarily removed a chronic diarrhea about 6 p.m. - or 7 a.m. - The diarrhea was later increased and was met by Lach. - Hale mentioned that there was a popular belief that indulgen ce in buckwheat cakes is a prolific cause of skin eruptions. - He found it curative in cases of eczema, erythema and intertrigo. - Deep-seated and persistent effects upon the head. - Vertigo, confusion. - Severe pres - sive or bursting pain in many parts of head wi th upward pressure. - Pain in forehead, back of eyes, through temporal region on either side. - Congestive headaches (Bell., Glon., Nux-v., Sep.). - Itching, smarting, swelling, heat and soreness in the eyes. - Soreness in the ears. - Erysipelas, frostbite (Agar.). - Swollen, red, inflamed and sore nose. - Fluent coryza with sneezing, followed by fullness, dryness and the formation of crusts. - Burning, sore- Fagopyrum esculentum ness and persistent pain from even gentle pressure. - The face is pale or unevenly flushed with dark semicircles below the eyes. - Swollen, hot and dry, as though severely sunburned, with cracked and sore lips. - The mouth feels dry and hot and yet saliva is not wanting. - Soreness and swelling of roof of mouth. - Tongue is red and fissured along its edges. - Bad taste in the morning (Puls.). - Soreness with pain in throat, just back of the isthmus of the fauces. - Feeling of exco riation and soreness extending deep down in the pharynx. - Elongated uvula, swollen and red tonsils. - Sensation of rawness in the throat (Phyt.). - Scarlet redness of the neck below the mastoid process. - Throbbing of the carotids. - Neck feels tired, the head heavy. - Parotid glands are swollen and painful. - Persistent morning nausea, vomiting of pregnancy. - Appetite improved by eating (opposite of Ly c., Nux-m.). - Empty or “all- gone” feeling at the stomach (Sep.). - Fullness and pain in the abdomen, but no rumbling. - Frequent discharges of flatus. - The region of the liver is painful, tender, worse from pressure, compelling the patient to lie on the left side. - Stools are pappy or watery, profuse, offensive, followed by tenesmus. - Scalding urine, pain extends from testicles to abdomen. - Profuse, offensive smelling perspiration on the male genital organ. - Bruised or burning pain in the right ovary, particularly w hen walking. - Pruritus with slight yellow leucorrhea, more when at rest than when exercising. - Persistent, heavy, pulsating pain in chest, worse from deep inspiration. - Dull pains around the heart, with oppression and oc casional sharp pains passing through t he heart. - Pressure with the hand increases the oppression. - Increased pulse, extremely variable. - Stiffness and soreness of all the muscles of the neck, with pain and a feeling as if the neck would hardly support the head. - Dull pains in small of back with st itching pains in the region of the kidneys. - Pains with occasional sharp stitches extend from the arms to muscles of both sides of chest. - Dull, aching, rheumatic pains in the shoulder. - Stinging and burning pains extend the whole length of fingers, aggravated by motion. - Streaking pains pass through arms and legs with sharp pains extending to feet. - Pains extend from hips to small of back, frequently run down to the feet. - Sleepiness in the evening, stretching and yawning. - Easily wakened when the mind is diverted, but soon falls again into sleepiness. - Sleep is disturbed by troublesome dreams and frequent waking. ### Chest - Heavy feeling, bruised pains and stitches in chest. - Twinges of pain up and down left breast, outer side. - Sharp, stitch-like needle prick in right breast on inspiration. - After retiring, s evere sticking through breast from nipple backward, better by pressure. - Constitutions - Weak constitutions. - Pain around heart, better lying on back, extending to left shoulder and arm. - Palpita tions with oppression. - Pulse irregular intermittent, rapid. - Light feeling in chest. - Throbbing in all arteries after retiring. - Kidneys - Stitching pains in region of right kidney. - Cutting in urethra. - Difficulty in voiding last drops of urine, several drops pass after he thinks he has finished. - Touching the neck occasions a cough with a smarting sensation extending to the ear and throat, under lobe of right ear. - Breath very offensive. ### Stomach & Abdomen - Bruised, sore feeling in stom ach. - Uneasy, empty feeling in stomach. - Belchings of scalding, hot, acid, watery substance, better coffee. - Drooling. - Persistent nausea, better eating. - Temperature - Chills along back in after noon. - Cold, clammy sweat at night, very profuse. - Sweat of hands, though cold. - Hands and feet alternately hot and cold. - Soles of feet moist, disagreeable odor in axilla. - Face, head and hands burn in afternoon. - Heat and restlessness after retiring. - Abdomen distended with flatulence, worse by pressure of clothes. - Soreness in hypogastrium. ### Urinary & Genital - Profuse offensive sweat of genital organs. - Itching, better by cold water. - Pruritus vulvae with yellow leucorrhea, worse rest. - Leucorrhea staining yellow. - Burning in right ovary. - Pains in right ovary, on walking in afternoon. ### Extremities - Stiffness and bruised sensation in the muscles of the neck, with sensation as if nape of neck could not support head. - Pain in shoulder with pain along fingers. - Itching in arms and legs, worse towards evening. - Itching deep in hands. - Streaking pains in arms and legs. - Feet numb and pricking. - Liver - Pain in region of liver on stooping. - Bruised, sore feeling at 10 a.m., worse lying on right side. - Sharp sticking through liver from the back. ### Neck & Back - Stiffness and bruised feeling in the muscles of the neck with sensation as if nape would not support the head. - Breasts - Breast less painful than usual before period. ### Skin - Eczema. - Erythema. - Intertrigo. - Blind boils. - Skin hot. - swollen. - Severe itching, better by bathing in cold water, worse scratching, and touch. - Itching of hands, deep within.Itching of knees, elbows and hairy portions. - Senile pruritus. - Sore, red blotches. - Vesicular, pustular and phlegmonous dermatitis. ### Sleep - Constant desire to yawn and stretch, 5 to 6 p.m. - Restless night, wakes 5 a.m. - and sleeps again, many dreams.
