Even on prolonged use,  it has not produced any untoward\nside effect.  Its main action is on the liver and the circulatory system.\n\nCommonly, it is considered as the reme dy for liver problems.  It also\nhas many other features like the tendency to nose bleed  along with\nthe feeling of cool breeze over the head.  The eyes feel great outward\npressure and the eyeball protrudes out .  This particular sign is also\nnoticed in Belladonna.  In Carduus Marianus, the bleeding from the\nnose is preceded by irritation inside the nose.\n\nIn Carduus Marianus, there are symptoms pertaining to the stomach\nalso.  This is due to the fact that whenever there is a problem with the\nliver, the stomach is also affected.  The taste inside the mouth is bitter\nand unpleasant.  The tongue shows a dirty coating.  There is loss of\nappetite.  There is typical bad odour  from the mouth, secondary to the\nstomach dysfunction .  A stomachache, moving from the left to the\nright, is also a sign of  Carduus Marianus.  It  shows that the liver\ndisorder has disrupted the stomach function also.  By this time, the\npatient vomits dark blood.  There is pain on the chest and over the\nright-sided ribs, which becomes worse on movement.  The pain over\nthe chest may radiate to the sh oulders, the back and the upper\nabdomen.\n\nWhen the patient is lying on the left side, he feels pain on the right\nside, as if somebody is dragging h im downwards.  This symptom is\nnoted in other remedies as well.\n\nCarduus Marianus has been found to be very useful in the treatment\nof stones in the gall bladder .  The lining over the gall bladder\nbecomes swollen and painful.  There is a piercing sensation over the\nspleen.  The skin over the left side of the body becomes\nhypersensitive and sore.  There is severe chronic constipation .\nStools are clay coloured.  Bleeding piles develop and urine is deep-\ncoloured.\n\nDue to the diseases of the liver, there is a cough affecting the lower\npart of the right lung.  There is pa in over the scapula like the patients\nof Chelidonium and Aesculus.  Ther e is pain over the right buttock\nand the hip joint, which radiates down the leg.  Muscular spasms also\noccur. Carduus Marianus is very us eful in the treatment of hip pain\nwhich gets worse on movement.  In  a patient of Carduus Marianus,\nthere is a tendency to develop varicose veins.  In all such remedies\nassociated with bleeding of dark coloured blood, there is a tendency to\ndevelop spider webs of blue colour.  Feet become swollen\n(oedematous).  Cramping of the f eet and the calves make walking\ndifficult.  Cramps of the legs whic h develop on walking fast, are best\ntreated by the combination of Bryonia and Arnica.  When the disease\nhas reached an advanced stage, the patients of Carduus Marianus may\nnot even walk a few steps.  The f eet become weak.
